Government Grant Money
Government grant money – if you watch late night TV – you’ve seen the ads! The guy in the funny looking suit, hawking a program that promises free government grants for any use you want! No repayment, no qualifying – just apply!
The question is: do government grants really exist? The answer is yes: government grants really do exist – but let’s take a look at what we should really be calling ‘grant money’.
Unfortunately – and quite the opposite of the usual ad – the U.S. Government doesn’t just hand out free grant money. Government grants must be applied for, you
must qualify for them – and there are definitely ‘strings attached”!
A government grant money is not a gift or a present and there ARE certain ‘expectations’ attached to any grant that is given out.
In reality accepting any grant, whether through a private foundation or a government entity, entails certain obligations and responsibilities on the part of the person receiving the grant, and certain expectations that these responsibilities will be performed according to the terms of the grant on the part of the grantor.
The bottom line is that government grant money is not easily not available to everyone, and the majority of grants are given to groups and organizations involved in projects or research that will benefit a large group – such as their local community or the general population.
Projects that are community-oriented, or in grant terms – for ‘a good cause – such as a community program to re-train displaced workers, or a city project to rehab a low income area playground are the types of projects that often awarded government or community grant money.
So are these ads that offer grants for debt consolidation, home repairs, or business assistance all lies? No, not at all – but you need to know WHERE to look as these grants are not easy to find, and HOW to apply so that you meet the grant guidelines – and that is NOT as easy as it sounds!
The best route is to hire a Grant Specialist to help with with the process. Typically a good grants consultant charges from $1500 to $5000, depending on the type and amount of grant you are seeking. Alternatively, there are several excellent and comprehensive Grant databases that are very effective in guiding you to the right grants for your purpose
