college_applicationIf there’s one thing that you want to take your time on – it’s your scholarship application! A sloppy, incomplete or inaccurate scholarship application can kill your shot at college funding! Everything must be completely correctly according to the funder’s requirements and instructions –  there is NO ‘wiggle’ room for goof-ups here!

Here are 3 common mistakes you can easily avoid…..

1) Proofread every spot on your application! Don’t rely on spellcheck – it won’t catch the grammatical errors and in fact, may miss spelling error as well. Read and re-read your application then have your parents and if possible – a teacher, read it as well! Make sure your all of your personal information i s accurate as well: age, GPA, sports stats, etc. Anything that is relevant to getting the scholarship must be correct – there is no room for error here!

2) If a question is not relevant – enter “DNA” or “Does Not Apply” – do not leave any spaces blank. this way, the funding committee knows that you did not simply miss a question.

3) Follow the instructions EXACTLY! Unless otherwise stated – assume that the application should be typed – and no white out! If the application does allow for a handwritten application, use black ink, and never write in pencil, and never use whiteout.

4) Allow enough time for your application to arrive! A surprising number of applications are disqualified simply because the application arrived after the due date. There is no ‘grace period’ – it’s either on time…or it’s not. Period.

5) Don’t forget to sign the application! And in many cases,  you and your parent(s) must both print and sign the forms. Applications without the proper signatures are automatically disqualified.
