Graduate Studies Funding: Tough To Find, But Worth The Effort
Advanced Graduate Degrees are far more common today than they were a generation ago. In this day and age, more and more students are pursuing post-bachelor’s work at a university, which means that Graduate studies scholarships are in high demand as graduate school is often more expensive than getting your bachelor’s degree. Some of these students are in professional school pursuing law degrees or MBAs. Graduate work includes studying for an MA or Ph.D. in the humanities or sciences, as well as law or medical degrees.
Graduate scholarships generally use the same basic criteria as undergraduate scholarships: they look primarily at grades and test scores. Athletic scholarships generally only apply to the first 4 to 5 years of school.
Most students going after advanced degrees finance their schooling through loans – the belief being that since they will be going into better paying jobs, the loans will be more affordable.
However, this makes it very difficult for students wanting to pursue positions in research or education, where the graduate degree may be required but the salaries are not as high as in the legal or medical fields.
Fortunately, graduate scholarships, known as fellowships are often available in these fields. Fellowships usually cover full tuition and usually a small amount towards living expenses. Fellows will usually have part-time positions as teaching assistants or research assistants while attending school. In exchange, the fellows serve as research or teaching assistants part time while attending school.
Graduate scholarships are often available at the corporate level as well, usually in the research areas related to the company’s specific industry., and are usually limited to the science and medical fields.
Graduate scholarships, because of the variety and the fact that many of the funding sources are private companies and foundations are often vert difficult to locate. Consider using a grants consultant or database to save you time and effort in locating your funding
